Senator Sanders Unfiltered
by Senator Bernie Sanders | August 27th, 2009

Ted Kennedy will go down in history as one of the giants of the U.S. Senate and one the most accomplished legislators in American history. He will also be remembered, by those who knew him, as an extremely warm and caring human being whose public service was a brilliant reflection of his love and devotion to his country, his friends and his family.

As a member of the Senate health and education committee, chaired by Senator Kennedy, I was always impressed by his intelligence, knowledge and seriousness of purpose. His career in public service was driven by a deep sense of compassion and a belief that, in this great country, every American should be entitled to quality health care, education and other basic needs as well as equal justice under the law.

His passion was that every single American has health care as a right of citizenship. He understood that there was something lacking in our country today when we remained the only nation in the industrialized world that does not provide health care to all people.

At the end of the day, his view was that nobody should be left behind whether it was in health care, whether it was education, whether it was poverty in America. He felt very strongly about that.

Ted Kennedy devoted his lifetime to protecting those most in need, and tens of millions of Americans have been the beneficiaries. His absence from the Senate leaves an enormous void. His colleagues and the nation will miss him greatly.

Well said. This man was an american hero pure and simple. If there were only more people like this in goverment just think how much richer, fairer and enriched all our lives would be. If only half of our elected officals had the integrity and gumption of this man we would have a truly fair economic system that works for everyone and not just the top 5 percent. And certainly nobody would have to go broke or suffer and die because they dont have health insurance or a fat bank account.Thank you for caring about the common person. A life well lived Sen. Kennedy! May god always bless you and others of a true pure heart.

    Senator Sanders,

While we are mourning the loss of Sen. Kennedy, and the end of the era of the old Guard Kennedy Democrats that brought honor to US political leadership for The People who have no voice in Government, it is no small comfort to know that we still have some leaders like you who have not sold out, and who are still fighting against the takeover of our country by Corporatocracy.

You do the Kennedy Legacy Proud. Kudos Sir.

Senator Kennedy was and still is a giant among us. Of all of the great Kennedy's, he's the one who did the most work without fanfare but with much perseverance. He's a man of all people, always fighting for the rights and dignity of the least. He always saw people in what they could achieve more. Maybe that's why he stuck around in the Senate for so long. What especially moved me is his unyielding passion for the unprivileged when he was born with as much privilege as one can imagine.
