6 Beach-safe sex positions for hot summer nights

Sex on the beach is more than just a delicious tropical drink — it’s a total fantasy, until you wake up with enough sand in your clam to make a pearl.

It usually ends up being an idea that seemed totally brilliant until it wasn’t and you’re left with itchy places, a chafed back, a few rogue seashells and probably a hangover, too.

Sex on the beach can be beautiful when you stick to a few ground rules: Don’t get caught. Don’t do it on a public beach where you might scar children for life, or get arrested. Don’t do it directly on the sand, and don’t forget to rinse off when you’re done (you’ll thank me later). Finally, do at it at your own risk.

1. Doggy style

Consider this bedroom favorite a classic beach sex move for beginners. Doggy style beach sex covers all the bases: It keeps your lady business out of the sand, it can be discreet when you keep some clothing on and it taps into your hottest voyeur fantasies when you do it in a public place. “If you’re getting it on in a secluded part of the beach, doggy style is the perfect way to get into a feel-good position that you can modify with a pelvic tilt — so sand doesn’t go where the sun doesn’t shine, so to speak,” says Amy Levine of Ignite Your Pleasure.

2. In the water

This smokin’ beach sex move has Wild Things written all over it. And if you’re worried about getting caught with your pants down on a public beach, this option is even better. Once everyone has gone home for the day, try Dr. Dawn Michael‘s recommendation for making motion in the ocean, “He can hold her by the butt, and she can easily place him inside of her, and it can be done with a bathing suit on. Just slip it to the side or take the bottoms off, and make sure that it is a calm water day (not too many waves).”

3. On a beach ball

What is a beach ball if not a prop for some bouncing beach sex? This against-a-beach-ball position may be best suited for a private beach because of the obvious — people are going to wonder what you’re getting up to. But Janet Lieberman, CEO of Dame Products, insists that it’s worth a try at least once. “To save yourself, try positioning your body over a beach ball and have him come in from behind to reduce the risk of sand intrusion. An added bonus: It also prevents you from getting pushed flat.”

4. Reverse cowgirl

This is another bedroom fave that translates perfectly to a secluded spot on the beach. When you’re lying on the sand and watching the sunset after a few drinks, when you realize no one else is around — Emily Lyons, CEO of Lyons Elite, says get it. Beach sex can be successful when you avoid any position where the woman is sitting or lying down, explains Lyons. Lyons says beach-friendly reverse cowgirl is your best bet if you don’t want to wake up with a panty-full of sand in the morning.

5. Standing up

Ain’t nothing wrong with a little bump and grind, as long as you keep your nether-regions far above the sandcastles. Nicole Prause, Ph.D., sexual psychophysiologist and associate research scientist at the University of California Los Angeles, says that because micro-tears are always likely to occur during sex, adding sand to the mix can make this tearing even more painful. Prause recommends, “If you can find a wind-protected spot to lean standing against a boulder, that would protect you from both sand and indecent exposure arrest!”

6. Under a blanket

Remember the golden rule: Safe beach sex is all about keeping sand out of crevices and sex under wraps. If you’re not ready to go all the way in a semi-public setting like a beach, Dr. Jenn Gunsaullus, sociologist and relationship and intimacy counselor, recommends some good old-fashioned groping instead. The beach is perfect for foreplay “particularly when it’s after hours, and you can lay down and snuggle under a blanket together,” says Dr. Jenn. She recommends, “Wear loose fitting clothing that is easily accessible, as you reach, touch, stroke and please each other! This is much more subtle than attempting intercourse in a public place. And it also requires more creativity and thinking outside the box, instead of doing the same old.”
